In small reservoir high speed differential applications, conventional commercial gear oils offer little in the way of proper protective lubrication. When these differential units are exposed to too much foaming, this ultimately raises temperatures which leads to other problems that ultimately ruins both the differential unit and the lubricant. Differential Gear Oil utilizes the finest 100% paraffin base stock oils with a viscosity index minimum of 95. These heavy duty paraffinic base oils are extremely resistant to broad temperature changes. What this means is that Differential Gear Oil will maintain its correct viscosity when temperatures are high or when temperatures drop. These base oils go through a 3 step refining process to reduce any undesirable impurities that could contribute to the formation of unwanted contaminants such as varnish and sludge. Most conventional oils do not formulate their products using base oils that have gone through this rigorous 3 step refining process. With the advent of specialized aerodynamic bodies for over-the-road trucks and vehicles, which are designed to reduce air resistance, a byproduct of these aerodynamics is that they reduce the amount of cooling air flowing to the transmission area. Less cooling air results in higher operating temperatures. Add to that heavy loads and traveling at slower speeds creates an extreme operating environment for transmissions and differentials. Differential Gear Oil was formulated to lubricate at much higher temperatures than conventional commercial gear oils. It is rated to perform at up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit higher. Overall, between the base oils and chemistry, this oil provides superior thermal stability, reduced parts wear, and the ability to extend oil drain intervals. Many final drives and transmissions are forced to operate at much higher temperature ranges from 280 degrees Fahrenheit all the way to 320 degrees Fahrenheit. Operating at these extreme temperatures can cause an issue called synchronizer coking. Synchronizer coking causes difficulties in changing gears. If these deposits can be removed, then of course these shifting issues will disappear. Differential Gear Oil utilizes its own proprietary additive chemistry engineered to perform at extremely high temperatures and offer the ability to prevent the formation of detrimental deposits such as gum and sludge. Broad-based industry testing of transmissions and final drives has shown that temperatures around the seal area are exposed to high amounts of heat 30 degrees Fahrenheit to 50 degrees Fahrenheit range, which is beyond what is seen in the sump areas. These higher temperatures often lead to deposits forming around the seal area. These detrimental deposits can lead to elastomer losses, which can cause premature leakage. There seems to be evidence of a relationship between how severe the amount of deposits found around seals and premature leakage. Differential Gear Oil was engineered as a high temperature gear oil that utilizes base oils and specialized chemistry that is fully compatible with seal material. Differential Gear Oil may be used in limited slip differentials. Differential Gear Oil also meets the PG-2 Thermal Stability Test requirements. These gear oils are authorized by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as H2 lubricants which have no contact with food.
