If you have ever watched one of the many popular TV shows where couples buy a less than desirable home and completely renovate it to make it livable, then you know that home design is trending toward restoration rather than renovation. Hard floors such as hardwood, laminate, vinyl, and even stained concrete are far more popular than they have ever been before.

Whether you already have gleaming hardwood floors, are hoping to restore the original hardwood floors in your home, or even have purchased laminate to mimic the hardwood floor look, then you know that special care must be taken to keep your floors shining like new.

Wood, laminate, and other hard floors, unlike carpet, cannot easily disguise dust. No matter how regularly you sweep, you can almost always find dust and debris settled onto hard floors. This is why many homeowners purchase a dust mop because it helps them more easily maintain hard floors throughout their home.

My grandmother always told me that “cleanliness is next to Godliness,” and I took those words to heart. What is The Best Brass Cleaner?

Featured image for "What is the Best Brass Cleaner?" blog post. Brass cups next to wine glasses on a wood table.

Brass can be commonly found in many household items such as antique headboards and footboards, light fixtures, kitchen and bathroom faucets, doorknobs, door plates, hinges, serving trays, and many types of locks. Musical instruments like trumpets, French horns, bells, and trombones as well as items like vintage telescopes, old candlesticks, lanterns, and beautiful pieces of jewelry are also commonly made of brass.

Other common things made of brass include zipper pulls on jeans and jackets and even the thumbtacks you use to pin notes to bulletin boards. While you probably wouldn’t want to worry about polishing a thumb tack, you certainly do want to keep the other brass objects—especially your expensive musical instruments, fine antiques, and your favorite brass decor features in your home—all shiny and bright.

Over the years, people have tried various and genius ways to clean brass, including natural ingredients to clean the objects like cream of tartar, lemon, salt, ketchup, or vinegar. But these ways are messy and require a lot of mixing and measuring. There are chemical brass cleaners, but which one works best? Do you know how to clean brass and what is the best brass cleaner to use? We’ll explore the answers to these questions and more in this article, so read on.

Introducing the Plant

Hawthorn Berry (Crataegus Oxycanthus) is a plant from the Crataegus genus which includes bushes, shrubs and trees that are part of the same family as apples and roses. Commonly known as hawthorn, mayblossom, maytree, mayflower, thorn-apple tree or hedgethorn, this plant includes numerous species, all of which have different properties. The number of species has also been increased through the process of crossbreeding.

The plant itself is widely recognized for its bushy or tree structure, strongly resembling the structure of all plants belonging to the Rosaceae family. The hawthorn berry tree is rarely taller than 13 ft, yet it is famous for its strong wood. An interesting fact about the hawthorn tree is that it gets larger and denser with age.

The flowers and fruits are organized in groups and are surrounded by long thorns. The hawthorn berry tree blooms in May, which is how it got some of its nicknames. Its flowers may be white, pink or red with petals resembling those of a rose. Small berries, called haws, appear on the tree as soon as the flowers sprout and are usually red, although occasionally they may be black. As far as leaves are concerned, their shape and size vary, but their common trait is that they are shiny.

Best known for its use in different cuisines around the world, the health benefits of black pepper may prove to be a real low-key treasure when it comes to naturally improving your health and immune system.

In general, black pepper is a basic spice botanically named Peper Nigrum in Latin. In Ayurveda treatment, it carries the title of “the king of spices.” Originally, it is thought to be native to South and Southeast Asia, specifically Indonesia and it appeared in history as early as 2000 BCE. The spice was frequently mentioned throughout history and was even discovered in the nostrils of Ramesses II, who died 1213 BCE.

Today its use is most prominent in Indian cooking and folk medicine, specifically in Ayurvedic practices.

The spice as we know it comes from the pepper plant, which is a climbing and bushy flowering vine, easily recognized by its heart-shaped leaves. It usually grows in tropical climates. The black pepper plant is usually round shaped and it is organized in clusters which hold the fruit. Precisely, the fruit is what we know as black pepper. The plant is picked before its fruit, in botany better known as drupes, is ripe, and it is cooked and dried into the spice we use in our diet.
